In these past few weeks of living and studying abroad in Italy, I have quickly learned the importance of a traditional Italian meal, particularly dinner. It is beyond the multiple courses of delicious food; rather, an opportunity to unwind from a long day and enjoy the company of dear friends and family. As mentioned in my video, this past weekend I traveled to Florence and had the intention of attending Eataly Firenze’s “Festival del Babà e Cucina Napoletana”, an event in conjunction with the celebration of the city of Florence’s patron saint. However, upon arrival, I learned that the food festival was instead a few specialty items on the restaurant menu rather than an opportunity to walk around the store and sample dishes. In this case, I chose to focus on the cultural importance of dining through my observations walking around Florence, and my experience sharing a meal with my peers at Ristorante di Santa Maria Novella. In addition, I also included insight reflecting on experiences dining with a family friend during a weekend trip in Bologna, and dinner with our Italian friends from the University of Urbino.
